In 2002, Brett Sears broke onto the eclectic Albany music scene as one half of the acoustic duo Southpaw. Brett and his counterpart, Aaron Brown combined lush harmonies, smooth licks, and punchy lyrics to deliver solid acoustic rock performances. Southpaw collaborated on the 2005 release of "Decaffeinated" with Sean Madden, Brian Kaplan, and Valerie Webb. During 2005, Southpaw also played Albany’s Historic Palace Theater for the Rock to Rebuild Benefit Concert. They gigged extensively in local coffee houses and pubs, but in 2006, Aaron left Albany for California, and Southpaw played its last live show in May of that year. After the demise of Southpaw, Brett continued to play the Albany music scene with solo performances. He also worked extensively with Sean Madden during 2006 and 2007 and continued to develop his skills as a singer/songwriter playing local coffee houses and pubs. Sean’s folk style was a big influence on Brett, who started writing more songs in that style while still maintaining his rock and roll roots. In January of 2007, Brett’s song “Be Good” was a finalist in a local songwriting contest for the City of Albany’s “Dads Make A Difference" campaign. Locally, Brett is influenced by Sean Madden and Brian Kaplan. Other influences include Bruce Springsteen, Beatles, REM, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. In 2012, Brett started gigging with a new partner. Alice Oldfather of the Berkshire Ramblers and the Hasty Martyrs has joined Brett for many performances, lending her beautiful vocals and violin to the live performances. More recently, Brett and Alice have been joined by Sean Madden to form the Canjo 10's, a three piece rock/folk/bluegrass musical extravaganza. He also has started gigging with Scott Smith, Richard Bourgeois (on the bone), and Sean as Brett Sears and the Volunteers. Brett continues to gig extensively in support of his CD “Second Sight,” a CD to benefit the Children’s Glaucoma Foundation. You can learn more about the foundation at www.childrensglaucoma.com.
